Testing of a proposed development site at Brinny townland was undertaken. Eight trenches were excavated at regular intervals although the presence of a gas pipeline and 110kV overhead line meant that test trenches had to be reduced in length on the western side of the site. A burnt spread was uncovered in Trenches 2 and 3 within the area of the proposed playing pitch at 0.3m below the surface of the field. No other archaeological features were uncovered. Drainage was evident throughout the site in the form of ceramic pipes and stone drains.
In order to mitigate any potential negative impacts on the monument a number of mitigation measures will be implemented prior to and during construction to ensure the adequate protection of the monument. The burnt spread will be preserved in situ.
