Archaeological testing of a proposed development site was undertaken at Curragh townland, Kanturk, Co. Cork over a number of days in March 2019. The site is located in the centre of Curragh Td. on the northern outskirts of Kanturk town. Fifteen trenches were excavated within the site at regular intervals. A burnt spread was uncovered at the southern end of Trench 7. No other archaeological features were uncovered. A number of double ditches and one single ditch were uncovered in Trenches 2-5 which corresponded with boundaries marked on the 1st Edition OS map thereby dating the boundaries to the post-medieval period. In general the trenches were excavated to a depth of between 0.3m and 0.4m below present ground level.
The burnt spread has been designed out of the proposed development layout and therefore will be preserved in situ (avoidance). A number of mitigation measures, however, will be implemented prior to and during construction to ensure the adequate protection of the monument.
