Monitoring of ground reduction works at the Bandon Primary Care Centre development site, St. Patrick’s Place, Bandon, was undertaken on an intermittent basis between 19 April and 22 May 2019 in order to comply with Condition 2 of An Bord Pleanála grant of planning (Ref. No. 301500/18). Formation level for the new development was c.1.2m below modern surface level (BMSL).The sub-strata underlying the tarmac and concrete slab layers generally comprised bands of rubble, coarse gravel and sand which contained modern inclusions and was evidently subject to heavy disturbance during the construction of the 20th-century buildings which occupied the site prior to demolition. The lowest excavated levels (c.1.2m BMSL) comprised a mix of black sandy gravel and dark brown silt which contained demolition-related debris and modern ceramics. While nothing of archaeological significance was revealed, wall foundation alignments were uncovered along the eastern and southern perimeters of the site. These foundations have been interpreted as the southern and eastern boundary walls of the 19th-century Potato Market. The well-constructed and substantial sandstone and shale walls, which appeared to be of 19th-century date, were subject to significant disturbance during the 20th century. The surviving sections of wall foundation will not be impacted by the development and will be preserved in situ.
