Planning permission (ref. 18/05646) was granted by Cork County Council to construct a cattle underpass and ancillary works on a public road, agricultural entrance at Ballynalacken, Knockaskehane, Kilworth, Co. Cork. Condition 2 of the grant of planning stated that all topsoil removal associated with the development should be monitored. The site of the underpass is on the boundary of the townlands of Ballynalacken (to the south) and Knockaskehane (to the north). Three archaeological sites are located to the immediate west of the development site in Ballynalacken townland. The ruins of Leitrim church and graveyard (CO028-030001 & 002) are located approximately 25m west of the site and a vernacular (CO036-054) thatched house is located to the south-west.
The topsoil was removed from the area of the cattle underpass in the fields to the north and south of the public road by track machine using a flat bucket. The stripped area in both fields measured approximately 7m in width by 25m in length. The topsoil measured 0.3-0.4m in depth and overlay an orange brown silty clay that was uniform across the area. The section of the boundary between the fields and the public road that was removed by machine consisted of a low narrow earthen and stone bank approximately 1m high that supported a hedgerow. No archaeological features, stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded in the area of the underpass on either side of the public road.
