An archaeological impact assessment which included a test excavation was undertaken in advance of a grant of planning permission for a farmyard development in Knocknahorgan townland, 2.5km north-west of Glanmire. The proposed development occupies a rectangular-shaped parcel of land flanking an existing farm trackway. A standing stone (CO063-091) is located 150m to the west of the subject lands in the north-east corner of an adjacent field. In all, six trenches were excavated to the surface of the natural subsoil which consisted of a well-drained loose shale within an orange/brown soil matrix. Three trenches (T2,T4 & T6)were placed on the footprint of the agricultural buildings, one (T3) at the location of a proposed slurry storage tank, another (T5) at the location of a proposed walled silage pit and the sixth trench (T1) along the route of a vehicular access to the farmyard development. No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered in any of the tested areas.
