An application to Cork County Council to expand a farmyard in the townland of Sheepwalk West in close proximity to two levelled enclosures led to a request for a test excavation to be undertaken. One enclosure is located on the east side of a minor public road and north of the farmyard. The other enclosure (CO035-085) is located to the east of the farmyard. A test excavation carried out in advance of the construction of a storage shed in 2010 revealed the ditch of enclosure (CO035-086). Subsequent monitoring by the writer in 2010 exposed two pits containing sherds of Bronze Age pottery and deposits of charcoal and burnt stone.
The development is for further expansion of the farmyard into a greenfield site 25m from enclosure (CO035-086). In all, four test trenches were excavated. A single test trench was placed east-west across the central area of the footprint for a proposed machinery shed at the southern end of the farmyard. The other three trenches were placed on the footprint of the proposed extension to the shed excavated in 2010. The topsoil overlay firm relatively stone-free clay and no feature or finds were exposed in any of the excavated trenches.
