Monitoring was recommended as a condition of planning for a second phase of development at the MSD facility in Carlow. An application was made to Carlow County Council to use lands to the immediate west and east of a levelled enclosure/ringfort (CW02-012) within the grounds of the existing facility for a temporary site compound.
This phase of the work included topsoil stripping at the site of the temporary storage area, the excavation of a silt trap adjacent to a stream in the vicinity of the enclosure and the installation of a new foul sewer in the south-west corner of the development site. The site of the levelled enclosure was securely fenced off prior to the commencement of groundworks and monitoring was confined in the main to two areas of disturbed ground to the east and west of the monument. These lands will be reinstated landscaped areas following completion of construction.
Topsoil removal commenced at the south-west corner of the site and extended towards a stand of deciduous trees planted as a screen during the first phase of construction. The overburden rarely exceeded 0.1m in depth in most excavated areas and the underlying clay was made up of inert materials containing evidence for modern debris from the previous phase of construction. No archaeological finds or strata were identified.
