The watching brief was undertaken to fulfil part of the requirements of the Scheduled Monument Consent that was issued to allow repair works to be undertaken on the lock.
Following the collapse of a retaining wall that formed part of the make-up of the lock, work was required to remove the collapsed section of wall, number the stones from the collapse so that they could be used for the reconstruction of the wall and to excavate the foundations of the collapsed section of wall to investigate construction techniques.
