The proposed carpark and foot bridge development is located on land adjacent to the Carnbane Industrial Estate on the northern outskirts of Newry in County Down. The ground consisted of a triangular area of land bounded by the Newry River to the east, existing industrial developments to the north and the Shepardsway Road to the south. In addition to the carpark it was proposed to construct a footbridge across the river to access the main site to the east.
Testing took place on 24 June and 29 September 2019. The testing consisted of the machine excavation of seven 2m wide test trenches, set some 10m apart located to cover the entire footprint of the proposed carpark development and the monitoring of the excavation of the two foundation pads for the proposed footbridge.
The only two noteworthy features were the agricultural drainage gullies in the north-east corner of the carpark area and the probable evidence for the original meandering course of the Newry River prior to it being canalised as part of the development of the area into an industrial park in the later years of the last century.
