Excavation was carried out at the site of a residential and commercial development at Bellvue Hill, Delgany, County Wicklow between 9 and 12 October 2018. A cremation burial site comprising five pit burials in a linear east-west alignment measuring 6m by 2m was identified in the north-east corner of the field. An area 10m by 10m was opened up around the features. No trace of any associated features or of any cairn/mound which covered the burials was found. Preliminary analysis indicates that these features date to the Bronze Age period in which a wide variety of burial practices were used (2500-500 BC).
All of the soil from all of the five cremation burials was sent for osteological analysis, as well as for C14 dating, charcoal and seed analysis if required. Post-excavation analysis is on-going and C14 dating will enable the burials to be dated with certainty.
