The 8.67 hectare site comprises a number of fields in agricultural use on the outer edge of the village of Ashford, Co. Wicklow. It is bounded to east by the R764 (Ashford-Roundwood) and to the south by the R763 (Ashford-Annamoe). A test-excavation under licence no. 17E0195 was undertaken from 26-30 June 2017 following a geophysical survey under licence no. 17R0073. Three areas of archaeology were identified, Ballinahinch 1-3, and these were excavated in October and November 2017 under licences 17E0554, 17E0555 and 17E0557, respectively.
This licence concerns the monitoring of the remaining ground-works at the site. This took place from 11 December 2017–9 February 2018 under an extension to the testing licence. That licence was transferred from Aidan O’Connell to Liam Coen on 14th December 2017.
The topsoil was removed using bulldozers and mechanical excavators with grading buckets. No further archaeological features, deposits or artifacts were identified during the monitoring of the ground-works.
