A programme of archaeological testing was carried out at the site of a proposed residential development in Kindlestown Lower, Delgany, Co. Wicklow as a condition of planning. Testing was carried out on 12 December 2018 using a mechanical excavator fitted with a flat grading bucket. The trenches targeted the open green space of a plateau, designated Phase 2 lands. They revealed three single pit features of archaeological potential in three distinct locations, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas (AA) 1–3.
The features recorded in AA1–3 are undiagnostic in terms of date and function, however they may be related to more definitive archaeological activity situated beyond the proposed development area such as the extensive prehistoric landscape recorded in Killincarrig and Charlesland 1–2km to the south and south-east or the local medieval and post-medieval landscape characterised by the occupation of Kindlestown Castle (WI008-017) 185m to the west and Killincarrig Castle (WI013-005) c. 230m to the south-east. Based on current evidence, however these features are considered to be of local significance.
