Test trenching was carried out on 14 August 2018 in advance of a proposed residential development. The development is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Newcastle Middle Historic Town (ME044-0005). Eight test trenches totaling approximately 230 linear meters were opened within the proposed development site.
The trenches were opened within two paddocks to the north and east of the farmhouse and within the barnyard of the farm. The location of the test trenches followed the footprint of the proposed development.
All trenches were excavated to the underlying natural subsoil, which presented as a loose sandy stone-filled riverine gravel appearing at 0.3-0.55m BGL in the trenches close to the river, and as a tan sand with stone and pebble inclusions at 0.3m BGL in all of the other trenches.
No archaeological features, deposits or artifacts were uncovered.
