Pre planning test trenching was completed at the site of a bungalow, garage, on-site treatment unit and new entrance to existing farm avenue at Scurlocks Leap, Manor Kilbride, Blessington, Co. Wicklow on 7 September 2018.
A previous application, Planning Ref 18/353, which was adjacent to and south-west of the current site was refused planning permission in May 2018. One of the conditions for refusal was on the basis that the site is within the confines of ‘field system’ WI006-006 and archaeological investigations carried out to the requirements of the relevant bodies had not been completed. The Department of Culture Heritage and the Gaeltacht had recommended a request for an archaeological impact assessment to be submitted as further information which was not submitted.
Pre-planning test trenching was carried out to accompany a new planning application taking into consideration all the conditions for the refusal of Planning Ref 18/353. The proposed location of the dwelling associated with Planning Ref 18/353 was in an elevated position and ‘not visually integrated into the landscape’. The client has moved the site location north-east of this into the adjoining field and the footprint of the development including house, percolation and driveway were tested.
The site is located within the confines of field system WI006-006, which will not be directly impacted upon by the development and the results of the test trenching indicate that no sub-surface archaeological features or finds are present within the footprint of the proposed development.
