Test trenching took place at the site of a derelict house at 11 Michael Street, Townparks, Wexford. Given the location of the site in a Zone of Archaeological Potential for Wexford Town (WX037-32) an Archaeological Impact Assessment was requested as further information by Wexford County Council (Planning Ref 2018/1044). The site is also within the constraint area for St Michael's Graveyard and Church (WX037-032036 and 032017).
The site is located in an area of rich archaeological potential, across the road from the aforementioned early medieval graveyard and also in the suburbs and just outside the Norman walled town in what may have been burgage plots.
The build-up of material on site at the location of the proposed extension relates to domestic occupation in the 19th century. Furthermore there was no trace of disturbed medieval layers or finds in these debris layers.
