Excavation was carried out at Ballydawmore 9, Co. Wexford of features identified in testing undertaken during the construction phase of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy Scheme. The archaeological site at Ballydawmore 9 is in a Permanent Fill Area (PFA 8) that lies contiguous with lands acquired by compulsory purchase order for the construction of the M11 mainline in Ballydawmore townland. A detailed impact assessment, which was prepared for the fill area in November 2017 (Tobin 2017), recommended advance archaeological test trenching. The site of Ballydawmore 9 was discovered during a subsequent programme of testing in February 2018 directed by Liza Kavanagh of IAC Ltd under Reg. No. E004943 and Ministerial Direction No. A054.

The site of Ballydawmore 9 was situated in a field of undulating pasture, with views to the south and the west, c. 4km northeast of Enniscorthy.

Ballydawmore 9 comprised three areas of archaeological potential (AA1–3) originally identified during test trenching. Archaeological Areas 2 and 3 (AA2 and AA3), comprising a single pit and four small pits respectively, have been preserved in situ. Archaeological Area 1 (AA1) consisted of a spread of burnt mound material, two external pits, a sub-rectangular trough and a circular trough linked by a possible channel, sixty-eight stake-holes and two possible post-holes. Four field drains and a former field boundary, which impacted upon the archaeology recorded in this area, were also identified. A total of 25 palaeoenvironmental samples were taken from features recorded and a single artefact, a polished stone axe, was recovered.
