A programme of test trenching was undertaken within a proposed permanent fill area (PFA 8) during the construction phase of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy PPP Scheme. Testing was carried out in February 2018. The fill area will be used for the permanent disposal of inert materials retained during road construction.
A total of 43 test trenches, measuring 3,766 linear meters (8,475 sq. m), was excavated. In all, three archaeological areas (AA) were identified during testing which have been designated as Ballydawmore 9 (AA 1–3).
AA 1 comprises a spread of burnt mound material and two broad and shallow possible pits with burnt stone deposits. All of the features within this area were cut by two modern drains and a possible former field boundary ditch. Owing to the design of the fill area, the archaeological features cannot be preserved in situ, and were excavated under Reg. No. E004974.
AA 2, which was identified some 65m to the north of AA 1 along the fill area boundary, consists of a shallow sub-oval feature with a charcoal-rich fill.
AA 3 on the south-west boundary of PFA 8 contains two linear features and a possible sub-oval pit with deposits of burnt mound material, and a further irregularly-shaped pit feature containing a charcoal-flecked deposit.
