A total of eleven test trenches were excavated in the two areas; eight in Area 1 and a further three in Area 2. Three areas of archaeological remains were identified.
Area 1 contained two pits and five stake-/post-holes. While undated, a struck lithic retrieved from one of the pits suggests that they are likely to be prehistoric. No archaeological remains were discovered in the trenches to the west or east, however, there is a potential for further remains in the adjacent areas. It was advised that if this area is to be archaeologically excavated, an area surrounding the features of 5m in each direction should be machine stripped and hand-cleaned. If additional features are discovered, this area should be extended accordingly.
Archaeological Area 2 contained a single undated pit. No archaeological remains were discovered in the trenches to the west or east, however, there is a potential for further remains in the adjacent areas. It was advised that if this area is to be excavated, an area surrounding the features of 5m in each direction should be machine stripped and hand-cleaned. If additional features are discovered, this area should be extended accordingly.
Area 3 contained a very large charcoal-filled pit, probably a charcoal-production pit of medieval or post-medieval date. No archaeological remains were discovered in the trenches to the west or east and this pit is likely to be an isolated feature. It was advised that if this area is to be archaeologically excavated, an area surrounding the feature of 2m in each direction should be machine stripped and hand-cleaned. If additional features are discovered, this area should be extended accordingly.
