Testing was undertaken within the footprint of a proposed retail development within the townland of Kinnegad, County Westmeath. Testing was carried out in response to planning conditions attached to the proposed development (Planning Ref.:16/6230). It follows a previous desktop assessment carried out by Faith Bailey in 2016.
The site is bordered to the south by the modern R446 and the Clonard River and Kinnegad town is located to the immediate north. There are no recorded monuments located within the footprint of the proposed development area. The nearest monuments are the site of a bridge (WM028-003/ME046-019) located c. 20m to the east and a ringfort (WM027-070) c. 400m west-south-west.
Approximately 470 linear metres of test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development area over the course of two days in December 2018. A series of furrows were identified crossing all the test trenches running north-east/south-west.
No archaeology was identified in any of the excavated test trenches.
