A small test trench was cut on the site of a proposed concrete foundation pad for a kitchen extension at the Moorings pub and restaurant, Dungarvan. The site is beside the shell keep of Dungarvan Castle and straddles the line of the late medieval/early post-medieval town wall. The test trench came across masonry which is almost certainly the fabric of the town wall, and was expanded to the full footprint of the foundation without reaching either wall face. Two further cuttings for concrete pads were monitored, onto a roughly cobbled quayside outside the wall, and into subsoil and a cultivation soil or fill of the castle ditch.
The foundations were adjusted to avoid damaging the town wall.
