Testing was carried out here from 10 – 15 November 2017. No archaeological features were exposed along the route of the proposed Kilbarry Distributor Road, apart from a number of features associated with a burnt mound or fulacht fiadh, which were exposed within Field 11 at Kilbarry 1.
Excavation at Kilbarry 1 was carried out between 15 and 20 January 2018, under the same licence. The remains of a small burnt spread and associated features were identified. Traces of the burnt spread (C7) were identified to the north of the excavated area, extending northwards beyond the area of the proposed road, with a small possible pit (C10) to the east. Two troughs were also identified to the south. One was sub-rectangular (C8) and the second oval (C9). No traces of a plank or wattle lining were exposed and no stake-holes were identified at the base of either trough to suggest the presence of a wood-lined trough. A date of 2300–2060 cal.BC (3780±30 BP; ICA-18C/0740) was returned from a sub-sample of hazel charcoal (0.04g) from the fill (C3) of trough C9, which suggests a Chalcolithic date for this site.
