An archaeological evaluation was conducted ahead of the construction of an extension to a domestic curtilage to allow for a single storey extension to the west elevation at 8 Strahulter Road, Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone.
The wall proposed for realignment was recorded prior to demolition as required in the HED consultation of 18/12/2017. This wall is part of an enclosing wall associated with a walled garden that was located immediately adjacent to the proposed development site.
The part of the wall to be demolished was 20m long to allow access for the construction of the extension.
The wall consists of mortared local rubble. It has been topped with concrete coping and has been partially pebble dashed on the eastern face and untouched on the other side. The wall is 1.95m above ground, with an additional 1.2m below ground. Approximately 20m of wall was taken down to ground level. Where the wall extended below this level it was retained and extended to a depth of 1.2m.
Monitoring took place of foundation trenches excavated using a back acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
