Monitoring was undertaken of groundworks associated with the erection of fencing at Sportsfield, Coláiste Phobal, Roscrea. The site is owned by Tipperary Education and Training Board who obtained planning permission to undertake the erection of a security fencing around a sportsfield. As part of approved planning permission it was stipulated that the works be monitored as the proposed works are within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the historic town of Roscrea (TN012-010).
Limited excavations were required to facilitate the erection of the fence within the sportsfield. A large number of post-holes were excavated to anchor the fencing, undertaken with a mini track machine using a toothless bucket. The holes measured on average 0.9m long, 0.4m wide and 0.6m deep.
Stratigraphy revealed an imported topsoil, which either lay immediately on top of the natural deposition, or upon a levelling layer of sand/sandy clay. Modern plastic and other rubbish was identified within the topsoil. This confirmed local information which stated the playing field was created 30/40 years previously where the site was excavated to a suitable level and soil with better drainage properties was brought in to create a new sportsfield.
