Monitoring of groundworks for a new extension to Ballymote Community Nursing Unit was undertaken on a foundation measuring c. 30m north-west/south-east by 12m. The foundation was mechanically excavated to a maximum depth of 1.4m. The site was located to the south-east of Ballymote Castle, a National Monument. Pre-development testing had been carried out at the site in 2017 (Anne Carey, 2017:123). Monitoring did not result in the discovery of archaeological material. The stratigraphy uncovered indicated that the area had been disturbed in the past, most recently with the spreading of up to 1m of re-deposited soil to raise the ground level. There were no features of archaeological interest found and, apart from three sherds of post-medieval Blackware, no finds pre-dating the late-nineteenth/twentieth century were discovered.
