Monitoring of groundworks at Colgagh Co. Sligo was undertaken on 10 April 2018. The development consisted of the demolition of the existing cottage, rebuilding of a dwelling house at the same location and the construction of associated septic tank and percolation system. The development was in close proximity to SL015-032 Barrow. A 20m exclusion zone was established in order to avoid any topsoil stripping, depositing of materials or access of machinery within the north-western sector of the site - the area in closest proximity to the barrow.
Topsoil was stripped to the underlying substrate using a mechanical excavator equipped with a non-graded bucket. Monitoring of topsoil removal at the percolation and septic tank areas revealed no material of an archaeological nature. The demolition of the dwelling house was monitored to foundation level. The proposed new dwelling house will occupy the same footprint as the earlier house. No find or features of an archaeological nature were noted during this phase of works at the development site.
