Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Carroweighter 1 in advance of the N60 Oran Road Realignment Project, Co. Roscommon. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing (11E0247) and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services.
The excavation at Carroweighter 1 recorded a large circular enclosure, and related features, which were exposed within the footprint of the proposed road. 228 sherds of coarse pottery, and a polished stone axe, were retrieved from the fills of the enclosure ditch. The enclosure contained at least two structures and numerous pits, slot trenches, post- and stake-holes. At the exterior of the enclosure ditch, another probable structure was identified, along with a range of other features including kilns, pits, post- and stake-holes.
