Archaeological assessment (test trenching) was carried out in line with planning conditions associated with the proposed construction of a temporary bridge east of the existing Blackwater Bridge, at Coolshannagh, Mullamurphy and Kilnadreen, Co. Monaghan (Planning No: 18/8001) on behalf of the client, Monaghan County Council. The site contains one site on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Reg No. 41302006, Blackwater Bridge).

A total of 6 test trenches were excavated on 27 September 2018. No archaeological features or deposits were recorded. No evidence was recovered in any of the trenches that would suggest the deposition of any dredged material from the river over the area. The natural glacial boulder clay was evident at depths consistent with the existing slope of the hill towards the river. No made-up ground was evident along the river banks and no features were noted during a wade and metal detection survey of the river itself (carried out under separate licence 18R0190).
