A programme of archaeological monitoring of the Meath Watermain Rehabilitation - Phase 2 was carried out at Ratoath village, Co. Meath, between May and August 2018.

The project involved works within the historic town of Ratoath, and eastwards from the town. An additional 1km section of work was carried out in Sutherland townland, roughly 2.5km north of Ratoath. The installation works involved a mix of directional drilling through a polypipe and open-cut trenching. The open-cut trench measured 0.4-0.5m wide by 1.1m deep.

Throughout the site the exposed stratigraphy had an upper layer of modern tarmac and stone overlying a light, mid-brown natural clay. There were a number of modern services evident in the town section. Towards the eastern end of the works where the pipeline route approached a medieval church (ME044-034003--), cross (ME044-034006--) and cistern (ME044-034011--), a layer of mid-brown to black peat-like material was noted at the base of the trench.

Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
