A programme of archaeological monitoring was carried out of the Navan section of the Meath Watermain Rehabilitation - Phase 2. An archaeological assessment report of the overall project was commissioned in 2012 and updated in 2016 (Judith Carroll and Company). The assessment detailed areas recommended for monitoring extending from Bridge Street south-east along Academy Street, a section at Abbey Road and on Johnstown Road. These works were undertaken between January and May 2018.

The project involved the laying of c. 1.3km of pipe. The works were carried out using the open-cut method and, where possible, using the trench-less method which comprised the excavation of launch and receptor pits approximately every 50m.

The average trench dimensions were 0.4m wide by 1m deep exposing a thick road base below the tarmac over an orange brown clay or natural gravels. The majority of the work took place along Academy Street, with inspections also carried out at Abbey Road, Johnstown Road and the Kentstown road. The exposed section faces for the most part exposed modern fills around existing services with a natural gravel and compact clay under the road base. The only feature exposed was a stone-built 19th-century culvert on Academy Street.
