A total of 30 trenches were excavated on a 6ha site to the north and north-west of Areas A and B Dunboyne (17E0399). These trenches targeted geophysical anomalies identified by J.M. Leigh Surveys in May 2018 (18R0015). This programme of test-trenching took place as part of due diligence works at the pre-planning stage.
Four areas containing features of archaeological potential (AA 1-4) were identified by testing, including AA 1 a large (6m x 1.8m) curvilinear feature filled with charcoal lenses and red baked clay, in the east end of the development footprint. AA 2 a sub-oval possible pit marked on one edge by red baked clay, south-east of AA 1. AA 3 an enclosure (14.5m in diameter) with an associated internal linear feature near the western site boundary and AA 4 a possible large kiln to the north of AA 3. The shallow, truncated nature of these features, including the enclosure ditch, one of 15 enclosures within a 5km radius of site, are, from current evidence, of local significance only. The disturbance to these features was likely as result of modern agricultural practices.
