Monitoring was undertaken of groundworks associated with Phase 1B of a residential development at The Willows, Dublin Road, Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath. The monitoring was undertaken in response to a planning condition (Ref.: RA/170407). It follows a previous archaeological desktop assessment (Tobin 2017) which was informed by a geophysical survey (Nicholls 2017, Licence No. 17R0137). The report concluded that while no archaeology was identified within the site by the assessment the area had low potential for previously unidentified remains and as such recommended monitoring of topsoil stripping.

The development area is located to the south of Dunshaughlin town and immediate east of the R147 Road. Monitoring of ground works was carried out over the course of three weeks in June 2018. This involved topsoil stripping along the footprint of the access road within the eastern boundary of site, and to the north and west of the adjacent Phase 1A houses which were under construction at the time of works. The truncated remains of two former field boundaries were identified which align with those shown on the first edition OS map. Evidence for land improvement in the form of stone-filled drains was noted however no archaeology was present.

No further mitigation is recommended for the Phase 1B development.
