Pre-development testing of a site at Kilcolman Road in Claremorris, County Mayo, was carried out between 24 and 26 October 2018. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a discount foodstore with associated car parking. The testing was carried out in response to a Request for Further Information by Mayo County Council and was necessary due to the size of the site area and the scale of the proposed development.
The site was located across two fields of undulating pasture. There were no recorded monuments within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of ten trenches which measured 54m, 50.7m, 40.1m, 35.1m, 25.8m, 75m, 56.1m, 64m, 65m and 51.5m long respectively: 1.9-2.2m wide and 0.3-1.5m deep. Testing revealed natural undisturbed stratigraphy in seven of the ten trenches with modern fill associated with the construction of the adjacent Kilcolman Road in two more and the remains of a former field boundary in the remaining trench. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
