Pre-development testing of a site in Carrowmore townland, on the western outskirts of Knock village in County Mayo, was carried out between 2 and 5 October 2018. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a nursing home. Testing was carried out in response to a Request for Further Information by Mayo County Council and was necessary due to the size of the site and the scale of the proposed development. There were no recorded monuments located within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development, which was located across four fields of gently undulating pasture just east of the N17.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of twelve trenches which measured 34.3m, 48m, 98.2m, 98.8m, 19.85m, 73.1m, 86.3m, 30m, 54.6m, 49.4m, 97.8m and 57.6m long respectively; 1.6-2m wide and 0.2-1m deep.
Testing revealed topsoil above natural subsoil. Apart from a number of land drains and the remains of a field boundary, the stratigraphy was natural and undisturbed. The topsoil contained modern pottery sherds, modern glass fragments, an un-inscribed clay pipe stem and a piece of rusted metal.
Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
