Pre-development testing of a site at Luffertaun, Ballintober, County Mayo was carried out on 20 April 2018. The development consisted of the construction of a dwelling house and domestic garage. The testing was part of a Request for Further Information by Mayo County Council and was necessary due to the location of a ringfort (MA089-049) adjacent to the southern side of the proposed development site.
The development site was located in a large field of undulating pasture. The ringfort consisted of a roughly circular raised area with a bank and enclosing ditch. A causewayed entrance was located at east. The remains of an outer bank were visible in places.
Testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of five trenches which measured 38.5m, 12.5m, 32m, 7.3m and 16.6m long respectively; 1.6-1.9m wide and 0.3-0.75m deep. Below the topsoil were natural subsoils, fill and bedrock. The fill, which was found in one of the trenches, appeared to be result of a trial hole relating to a previous planning application at the site or land reclamation. There were no finds. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
