An archaeological assessment (monitoring) was carried out on a proposed development at Ballymakenny Road, Yellowbatter, Drogheda, Co. Louth. The site comprises an area known as Matthews Land within the North Drogheda Environs Project. This assessment was carried out at the request of Louth County Council.
The monitoring of Phase 1 was carried out in December 2018. During monitoring two pottery vessels associated with cremation burials were exposed. Further fragments from a broken pottery vessel, together with additional cremated bone, were found nearby. Despite topsoil stripping of an additional area around the features, no further archaeological deposits or finds were exposed within Phase 1. Nonetheless, this discovery raises the possibility of further such discoveries during the assessment of the remainder of the proposed development area.
