A programme of archaeological test trenching was carried out at Newtownstalaban, Drogheda, Co. Louth using a 14-tonne excavator. Six fields were tested as part of the assessment. A total of 28 test trenches were excavated. Each trench measured 1.8m in width; in total 2310m of linear meters were excavated. In general, the sod and topsoil measured on average between 0.3-0.45m thickness and lay above natural boulder clay.
No archaeological features or deposits were recorded within any of the test trenches. Some modern land drains were exposed in a number of trenches towards the south of the proposed development site. Parts of the site appear to have been stripped before or previously used for the storage of topsoil as is evidenced in aerial photographs from 2000 and 2005 as part of the development of the adjoining Termon Abbey.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified and no finds were recovered in the course of test trenching. The work is now complete and no further mitigation is required.
