An archaeological assessment in the form of a metal detection survey and archaeological monitoring of the site of a proposed foothpath and walkway took place at King William’s Glen, Tullyallen, Co. Louth from 23 May to 5 June 2018.
The proposed development is located outside the north-eastern buffer of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Brú na Bóinne in an historical landscape associated with The Battle of the Boyne, 1690. The surrounding landscape is rich in both prehistoric and medieval remains as is evidenced by previous archaeological excavations and the abundant monuments in the area. The surrounding landscape also contains buildings and structures listed in the NIAH and protected structures listed in the Louth County Development Plan 2015 – 2021 (Volume 2C Appendix 18 Record of Protected Structures).
Monitoring was undertaken of site clearance and excavation. Metal detection was also undertaken as the site is within the zone of the Battle of the Boyne, adjacent to the Williamite encampment (that possibly extended eastwards on the north side of the village), and the survival of metal finds associated with Williamite artillery was also possible.
No features or deposits of an archaeological nature were identified, and no finds were recovered.
