An archaeological assessment was undertaken on lands at Ramparts Road, Dundalk, Co. Louth in advance of a proposed residential development. A total of 6 trenches (461 linear metres) was mechanically excavated across the site.
Trenches 1 and 2 in the northern portion of the site had a loose dark sandy topsoil overlying a naturally occurring light grey silt. Trenches 3-6 to the south had two layers of hardcore varying in total depth from 0.5-0.65m from the surface. This overlay a dark brown clayey silt of 0.2-0.3m in depth containing frequent 19th-20th-century pottery sherds, charcoal, oxidised clay and brick fragments. This likely represents the recent build-up of ground levels and overlay the naturally occurring light grey silt. No archaeological features were recorded.
