The development was located on the west side of Market Street within the zone of potential for the historic town of Thomastown, Barony of Gowran, in Co. Kilkenny. Immediately north of the proposed development area are protected structures NIAH No.12317015 and NIAH No. 12317089.

Archaeological monitoring was undertaken of the topsoil stripping on the site of a commercial development of two adjacent properties in Market Street on 15 and 16 February 2018. The site was roughly rectangular in shape with groundworks located only in the rear yards of the properties.  Structural foundations and a partial metalled surface were uncovered in the south west of the site. The remainder of the site had been disturbed by prior groundworks associated with the town sewerage pipeline and earlier commercial development. Preservation in situ was achieved by raft foundations and buffer layers protecting the archaeology below.
