Pre-construction groundworks and topsoil clearance were monitored in advance of a single property residential development at Dunnamaggan East, Co. Kilkenny.
The development site was situated to the east of Dunnamaggan Village, south of the R699. It was a greenfield site, previously in agricultural use. The terrain in this area is gently undulating, sloping down to the banks of the River Glory to the west of the development site. It is situated in close proximity to a number of archaeological monuments, but there is no visual expression of archaeological features within the proposed development site.
Monitored ground-breaking work comprised the clearance of topsoil within the development site of the proposed house and on the line of the driveway. Three linear features were identified in the course of this ground-clearance work; these were investigated and found to be non-archaeological in nature.
The archaeological supervision of the ground works did not uncover any finds or features of archaeological significance
