Test trenching was undertaken for a proposed residential development, in a large agricultural field on the southern outskirts of Kilkenny City, in the townland of Poulgour. Testing was situated on undulating and raised ground with views of the surrounding area, falling sharply north to the left bank and flood plain of the River Breagagh.
A total of 17 test trenches (375 linear metres) were excavated following, and informed by the results of, a geophysical survey carried out by Joanna Leigh (under licence 17R0056). A number of geological variations in the till and depth of ploughsoil were identified in testing, plus a small number of land drains and modern dumping of domestic material. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed from this assessment.
