A programme of archaeological testing was carried out between 21 September and 30 November 2018 along the route of the pipeline associated with the Upper Liffey Valley Sewerage Scheme. A total of 60 trenches were mechanically investigated across the test areas, measuring a total of 4867.5 linear metres.
The scheme has been sub-divided into separate test areas (Test Areas 1-7). The trenches were excavated along the proposed pipeline construction wayleave targeting a minimum 15% assessment area.
The test trenching did not identify anything of archaeological significance. Some areas of modern disturbance were identified, most notably in Test Area 3 and Test Area 6, although localised modern disturbance was also evident in Test Area 4 and 5. Testing in a number of areas could not be completed primarily due to restricted access. In particular, significant sections of Test Areas 1 and 5 could not be completed. Other areas that were not accessible in Test Areas 3, 4 and 7 were relatively localised and, based on the areas tested around them, are unlikely to contain any significant archaeological deposits/features.
The assessment concluded that the proposed pipeline will not have any negative archaeological impact in these areas.
