Testing was undertaken at Ballinagappa Road, Clane, Co Kildare as part of an archaeological impact assessment for a planning application. Testing was undertaken as part of a request for further information by Kildare County Council.
There had been a previous requirement for archaeological testing as part of a planning condition (no. 14) issued by Kildare County Council, Ref: 18/938, for a previous application on the same site.
Test trenching revealed that the natural clay level lies at between 0.5m to 1.2m below present ground level. It slopes from north to south with a drop in ground level of up to 0.4m over a distance of 60m. A deep deposit of soft brown topsoil was found in all the test trenches lying above the natural level. There were very few stone inclusions in this clay.
Three test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed development and no archaeological features of finds were identified.
