Archaeological testing at Baslickane was undertaken over five days at the beginning of October 2018. A series of thirteen test trenches (T1-T13) totalling c.608m were opened at two areas with a back-acting track mini-digger machine using a 1.8m wide flat grading bucket. Eight test trenches (T1 – T8) were excavated across the footprint of the proposed cottages and internal access road beside the old clubhouse in Area 1 (ITM 450380, 564688) which comprises c.1.7 acres and is located c.30m south-west of the zone of notification of ringfort-rath KE098-045 and associated three huts (KE098-045001-003). Apart from the thin veneer of grass cover the entire area comprised disturbed ground made up of introduced modern fill including construction detritus. Virtually no original topsoil was found in any of the trenches. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted during testing in Area 1.
Five parallel north-east/south-west orientated test trenches (T9 – T13) were openeded in Area 2 (ITM 451172, 564225) across the footprint of three proposed cottages and internal road. The proposed cottages abut the zone of notification of the site of a recorded Enclosure and are in immediate proximity of an early ecclesiastical enclosure, KE098-049001. This area was, more or less, entirely impacted by construction of the Skellig Bay Golf Club in 2003 and again during landscape re-shaping and re-grading works associated with the construction of Hogs Head Golf Course in 2016. No archaeology was noted in any of the trenches in Area 2.
