Testing was undertaken with regard to a planning application to remove a hard stand area for touring caravans and to construct eight chalets at Bayview Caravan Park, Killeen, on the northern limits of Tralee town. The 60m radius zone of notification of a recorded enclosure KE029-084 substantially extends into the proposed development site.
A series of eleven 2m wide test trenches (T1-T11), extending for a total of c.300m, were opened across the western previously undisturbed area of the proposed development site. Topsoil was very similar in each trench and generally consisted of mid-brown to mid greyish brown material with an average depth 0.3-0.4m and occasional small stone inclusions. Linear features representing furrows were noted in a few trenches. Two areas of potential archaeology were investigated but proved to be non-archaeological in nature.
