A programme of monitoring was undertaken within and on the outskirts of Ardfert, Tralee prior to the construction of a new waste water treatment plant for the village. The ecclesiastical remains of the Cathedral, two associated churches and a graveyard are the dominant archaeological features of the village, along with the site of a round tower. The new waste water treatment plant is situated in Brandonwell townland to the immediate west of the direction to the Tyshe river from where this will discharge to the sea. Within the village, works were confined to a short section of the existing foul sewer network on the main street and include new sewerage areas, replacement pipes and manholes.
Monitoring was undertaken in two phases. Topsoil removal at the site of the waste water treatment plant in Brandonwell townland formed the first phase and took place over a period of two months from April to May 2017. Trenching during upgrade works to a section of the existing foul sewer in the village was undertaken in October 2017. Topsoil stripping at the treatment plant site exposed areas of cut-away bog that was reclaimed through the cutting of deep drainage channels. No archaeological features were identified either at the treatment plant site or along the wayleave that was excavated for the outfall pipe to the River Tyshe. Within the village, a wide shallow trench containing modern pottery was exposed. Nothing else of archaeological significance was identified during the course of upgrade works.
