Testing of the development site at Ardshanavooly, Killarney, Co. Kerry entailed the excavation of twelve linear test trenches (at 10m intervals and totalling 705m in length) across the entire 0.97-ha site. The licensed use of a metal-detector was incorporated into the test trenching investigations in order to assist in artefact retrieval (Licence ref. 18R0146).
A potential archaeological artefact was revealed in the south-western end of Trench 10, in the south-western corner of the landholding, where a large ledger grave-slab of unknown providence was revealed on the surface of a demolition layer associated with an adjacent farmstead. Preliminary analysis suggests this artefact may be an early to mid-nineteenth-century grave ledger. A more detailed investigation is needed to determine the exact nature of the find.
Nothing of archaeological was identified in the remainder of the trench or in any of the other eleven excavated test trenches suggesting the grave ledger is ex-situ.
