Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out on a development site at Ballyloughane, Co. Galway between 17 and 25 October 2018. The proposed development comprises a new playing pitch and public walkway/cycleway on a coastal site adjacent to the existing Liam Mellowes GAA club grounds at Renmore on the east side of Galway City. A geophysical survey was carried out at the site in February 2012 (McCarthy, 2012) and targeted pre-development testing was carried out in June 2013 (2013:548). Nothing of archaeological significance was found during testing. Monitoring of topsoil strip revealed a uniform stratigraphic sequence across the site with 0.2m of grey/brown sandy/clayey silt topsoil over 0.4m of orange/brown sandy/clayey silt subsoil over grey/white clayey sand boulder clay with frequent stone inclusions. The only finds were occasional pieces of modern pottery. No archaeology was found.
