Pre-development testing of a site in Treanrevagh townland, on the eastern outskirts of Mountbellew in County Galway, was carried out on 12 December 2018. The development consisted of the construction of a fuel filling station. The testing was carried out in response to a Request for Further Information by Galway County Council. There were no recorded monuments within or in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development site.
A large portion of the development site was comprised of a modern bungalow with front and rear gardens. To the east and north of the bungalow was relatively flat pasture, part of a larger field of pasture. To the west of the bungalow was an stoned access road, part of a larger development for which planning permission was previously granted. Spoil heaps were located on either side of the access road. No features of archaeological significance were visible during field walking of the proposed development site.
The testing consisted of the excavation of two trenches, located in those areas of the proposed development site which were accessible, i.e. the field of pasture to the east and north of the bungalow. The trenches measured 40.4m and 30m long respectively, 1.85-2m wide and 0.4-0.9m deep.
Testing revealed topsoil above natural subsoil with modern fill at one end of one trench and two areas of re-deposited subsoil in the second trench. The two areas of re-deposited subsoil contained animal burials and modern pottery. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
