In December 2018, test-trenching was carried out for a proposed social housing development in the townland of Ballynahowan East, near Salt Hill, Co. Galway. A previous assessment advised that geophysical prospection along with targeted test-trenching should be carried out by a suitably qualified archaeologist. Owing to dense vegetation, exposed bedrock and modern spoil, a geophysical survey could not be undertaken. Test-trenching alone would inform if any buried archaeological remains were to be threatened by the proposed development. This work was carried out under licence by Dr Alan Hawkes on behalf of Maurice F. Hurley Archaeological Consultants.
Fourteen test-trenches were excavated within the proposed development zone. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded from any of the trenches and no stratified finds were recovered.
